There are many different schools of thought on how to teach or learn jazz improvisation. Some people recommend learning all the relevant scales and how they fit chord sequences, some recommend learning lots of established phrases, licks and patterns, some recommend just learning and playing tunes by ear. The best jazz improvisers often can’t explain the process. November 27, 2017 There are some improvisers who know relatively little theory but have the rare gift of hearing the chord changes and […]

This article examines intervention strategies music teachers can implement to combat bullying. Students enrolled in music ensembles may experience outsider status within the school community as a whole, thus contributing to heightened vulnerability and victimization. — October 2, 2017 In 2007, Texas Monthly magazine published an article chronicling the experiences of high school musicians competing for positions in Texas all-state ensembles. Many music educators were simultaneously delighted and a bit uncomfortable as they read the article. On the one hand, […]

A search for the sound of an acoustic piano in Billboard’s current Hot 100 yields few results. The instrument’s warm tone is increasingly rare in an industry driven by computer-generated sounds —September 26, 2017 The instrument is nowhere to be found in “I’m The One,” a collaboration between DJ Khaled and Justin Bieber (pictured), or among the digitized marimbas of Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You.” “Strip That Down,” an R&B track from Liam Payne (formerly of One Direction), also relies […]

All across America, for decades, a strange cultural ritual has been enacted. Students at the end of elementary school are herded into rooms and handed a simple, hard white plastic instrument called a recorder that seems pathologically incapable of creating any complex music. — September 22, 2017 Learning to play the mass-produced wind instrument is an integral part of the curriculum of most elementary school music programs in the United States. I love how Marcos lets me learn so many songs, not just one! I like how he gives me compliments. It’s really fun when Marcos does the bass clef with the left hand and I get to make up my own song that goes with it for a warm up. It’s fun because I get to make up my own songs. I love the sound of the piano!

I really like that we get to pick what songs we want to learn in Marcos’s guitar class. I also love that he is compassionate and lets us progress at our own pace. Marcos knows EVERYTHING about instruments, and I’m glad he can share some of it with me. I’m glad that I get to learn how to read, write, and play music for the guitar. It is a lot of fun when Marcos and I play the guitar together!

I highly recommend 123 Rock to anyone looking for a music teacher!

Both of my children love their music lessons with Marcos. They look forward to their music lessons each week and come home eager to practice their new pieces. I especially love that he teaches them to compose their own pieces and inspires their musical creativity. Marcos is always positive and encouraging with my children, and he has a knack for bringing out their best. I highly recommend 123 Rock to anyone looking for a music teacher!
