I once took a bite of fruit that made the crispest sound like a fresh apple. It was a loud crunch. The memory would’ve been good had I actually been eating an apple. But no, it was a banana. Want to hear the rest of the story? Read on! — July 19, 2017 While I don’t exactly remember the flavor of this banana (honestly, it was pretty flavorless), the icky sound from 13 years ago stayed firmly in my mind. […]

The music industry is an unrecognizable place compared to just 10 years ago. — June 30, 2017 For an artist like Ne-Yo, who first tasted success in the early noughties, the transition has been hard to witness. I recently heard him speak at Web Summit alongside fellow music artist Tinie Tempah, Hans-Holger Albrecht, the CEO of Deezer, and Eric Wahlforss, the CTO of SoundCloud. While Ne-Yo, in particular, came across as slightly grumpy about the ‘good old days’ of the […]

This 3D-printed replica can put one of the world’s most famous violins in your hands. — June 27, 2017 Usually, we associate 3D printing with ultramodern technologies like cutting-edge medical implants or futuristic space fabrics. However, music technology researcher Harris Matzaridis’ ViolinoDigitale project has gone in entirely the opposite direction. What Matzaridis has created through the digital magic of additive manufacturing is an accurate replica of an original Stradivarius violin, the Sunrise Stradivari — one of the incredibly expensive and rare master […]

Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino and Fender’s SVP weigh in on why young people should play the guitar. — June 19, 2017 “I’ll just flat out say it: I’m not a very good guitar player,” reveals Bethany Cosentino, Best Coast’s rad-as-hell lead singer, and (still quite apt) guitarist. “But I’ve gotten away with being a guitarist in a band and it’s amazing,” she continues. “I love what I do, and I feel like I’m good at the guitar style I play, […]

Orla O’Sullivan was the first and only deaf and vision impaired student to choose music as a Leaving Cert subject. — June 13, 2017 Orla O’Sullivan is a deaf and visually impaired piano and keyboard teacher to deaf and hearing students.   While Beethoven became deaf in adulthood, Orla was only six-weeks-old when she became profoundly deaf as a result of receiving life-saving medication given to her for pneumonia. This makes Orla’s achievements even more extraordinary.  Orla also juggles her music teaching […]

Playlists are played out. — June 7, 2017 With apologies to the dumbbell, the treadmill, this weird sledgehammer, and those extremely dubious girdles that pledge to electroshock your abs into existence for only three installments of $39.99 plus shipping and handling, the single most important fitness accessory in the world is the universal set of earbuds. Everyone has a different preference for the brand of tunes that come through them—runners prefer upbeat jams that help pace their strides, while generations […]

Curious about which colleges listened to the most music on Spotify this 2017? And no – it’s not just the biggest schools that streamed the most music, in case that was your assumption. — June 5, 2017 Spotify took a peek at U.S. college students’ music listening behaviors and found some pretty interesting trends. Go to Northern Arizona University, the University of North Texas and the University of Houston for hardcore sleep-deprived music listeners on campus. They landed on both […]

Almost ten years ago, pianist Peter Dugan and baritone John Brancy met up at the Julliard School’s library, picked out some music and snuck into a dance studio to try out a few songs together. Little did they know that those sessions would be the beginning of an essential artistic collaboration. — May 29, 2017 Fast forward ten years and the duo is in the midst of one of the most important projects of their creative lives.  A new study published in the journal Scientific Reports found a link between crying to music and feeling pleasure. — May 24, 2017 If you deal with sadness by belting along to Adele and crying it out, you’re not the only one — and it might be beneficial for your health. It may seem counterproductive to listen to sad music when you’re feeling down, but new research shows that there’s a scientific reason for why we love crying to our […]

A new study shows a correlation between happiness and the enjoyment of music. Why? There could be many reasons… — May 22, 2017 A new study out of Australia confirms what we probably already knew: People who dance and go to concerts regularly are pretty happy. While it may seem obvious, comparing happiness and the enjoyment of music can tell us a lot about how music affects us psychologically. Researchers at Deakin University in Victoria analyzed 1,000 interviews with randomly […]

The right music in a restaurant can make you linger for dessert. The wrong kind will make you leave. — May 16, 2017 Restaurants agonize constantly over ways to eke the most money out of their customers. Dimming lights, deploying seasonal menus, and up-selling (more famously known as “Do you want fries with that?”) are all psychological tricks that many employ—and new research suggests there is another potent strategy to add to the mix. I love how Marcos lets me learn so many songs, not just one! I like how he gives me compliments. It’s really fun when Marcos does the bass clef with the left hand and I get to make up my own song that goes with it for a warm up. It’s fun because I get to make up my own songs. I love the sound of the piano!

I really like that we get to pick what songs we want to learn in Marcos’s guitar class. I also love that he is compassionate and lets us progress at our own pace. Marcos knows EVERYTHING about instruments, and I’m glad he can share some of it with me. I’m glad that I get to learn how to read, write, and play music for the guitar. It is a lot of fun when Marcos and I play the guitar together!

Both of my children love their music lessons with Marcos. They look forward to their music lessons each week and come home eager to practice their new pieces. I especially love that he teaches them to compose their own pieces and inspires their musical creativity. Marcos is always positive and encouraging with my children, and he has a knack for bringing out their best. I highly recommend 123 Rock to anyone looking for a music teacher!
