A History of Memorable Super Bowl Halftime Performances

From the early days of marching bands and simple routines, the Super Bowl halftime show evolved dramatically in the 90s with the introduction of pop stars like Michael Jackson, who set a new standard for halftime performances. His show in 1993 remains one of the most memorable and is often credited with raising the bar for musical acts at the event.

Throughout the years, we’ve witnessed unforgettable performances from legendary artists such as Prince, Beyoncé, Madonna, and Lady Gaga, all of whom brought something unique to the stage—whether it was groundbreaking choreography, surprises, or even political statements. The halftime show became more than just a musical performance; it became an integral part of Super Bowl Sunday celebrations.

The Super Bowl Halftime Show Today: A Cultural Phenomenon

As the years pass, the Super Bowl halftime show continues to be a cultural milestone. It’s not just a moment for music lovers, but a chance for artists to make history—often cementing their place in pop culture. With global streaming, millions of fans around the world are able to tune in, making the Super Bowl stage one of the largest platforms an artist can ever perform on.

In recent years, the halftime shows have reflected a broader array of musical genres. The 2021 performance featuring The Weeknd was a nod to the power of modern pop, while the 2022 show, headlined by Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, and Mary J. Blige, celebrated hip-hop’s influence on mainstream culture. The 2022 show was a milestone, being the first time hip-hop artists were given a spotlight to dominate the stage, illustrating just how far the genre has come.

Kendrick Lamar: A King of the Super Bowl Stage

2025: Kendrick Lamar Takes Center Stage

This year, Kendrick Lamar will make his Super Bowl Halftime Show debut, taking the stage for a performance that promises to be as powerful as his groundbreaking music. Known for his intricate lyricism, storytelling, and ability to tackle social issues through his art, Kendrick Lamar is poised to deliver a performance that goes beyond entertainment—it’s likely to spark conversations around culture, race, and politics.

Lamar’s career trajectory has been nothing short of monumental. With albums like good kid, m.A.A.d city, To Pimp a Butterfly, and DAMN., Kendrick has proven time and time again that he’s not just a rapper—he’s a poet, a cultural critic, and an artist who knows how to engage with the complexities of the world. Lamar’s previous performances—such as his standout 2016 Grammy performance and his collaboration with artists like Beyoncé at the 2016 BET Awards—have demonstrated his ability to captivate an audience and deliver messages with purpose. As he prepares for the biggest stage of his career, fans can expect his performance to reflect the artistry and thoughtfulness that has made him one of the most influential musicians of this generation.

What Will Kendrick Bring to the Super Bowl Stage?

Fans are already speculating about which songs Kendrick will perform. Could we hear classics like “HUMBLE.,” “Alright,” or “DNA.”? Will he bring out surprise guest artists? And given the political nature of some of his tracks, will Kendrick make a statement about the state of the world or offer a message of unity? Whatever the case, this will undoubtedly be one of the most anticipated halftime shows in recent years. I love how Marcos lets me learn so many songs, not just one! I like how he gives me compliments. It’s really fun when Marcos does the bass clef with the left hand and I get to make up my own song that goes with it for a warm up. It’s fun because I get to make up my own songs. I love the sound of the piano!

I really like that we get to pick what songs we want to learn in Marcos’s guitar class. I also love that he is compassionate and lets us progress at our own pace. Marcos knows EVERYTHING about instruments, and I’m glad he can share some of it with me. I’m glad that I get to learn how to read, write, and play music for the guitar. It is a lot of fun when Marcos and I play the guitar together!
