Tips for Learning Difficult Songs

It is widely agreed that not all songs come easily to individuals. The process of learning a challenging song can be both time-consuming and frustrating.

The following five tips are recommended to make learning a difficult song more manageable. Best of luck in your endeavors!

Friday, August 25th

1. Master the Art of Slowing Down

Embarking on a challenging song can be daunting, but fear not! One surefire way to conquer it is by slowing down the tempo. Take your time, savor each note, and ensure flawless execution. To keep yourself in sync, embrace the power of a metronome. Once you’ve honed your skills and gained confidence, kick it up a notch. Gradually increase the tempo until you’re effortlessly gliding at the intended speed.

And here’s a secret tip: For an extra adrenaline rush, push yourself to play the song even faster than the intended tempo, especially if you’re gearing up for a show-stopping performance!

2. Conquer the Beast – One Section at a Time

Imagine facing a mythical creature with multiple heads. To emerge victorious, focus your energy on the fiercest head first. It could be a measure, phrase, beat, or a mesmerizing musical figure. Devote your attention to mastering that section, then seamlessly transition to the music directly preceding it. Slowly build momentum, taking flight from the beginning and soaring through the most challenging part. Only then should you unleash your talents on the rest of the composition. Remember, don’t just stick to the fun and easy parts – conquer the beast!

3. Unleash the Power of Rhythm and Pitch

Prepare to tap into the raw essence of the song! Begin by immersing yourself in the captivating rhythm. Clap, sing, or channel it through a single note or chord. Allow the rhythm to flow through your veins until it becomes instinctive, an unstoppable force. Next, isolate the pitches. Play each note in a deliberate sequence, disregarding timing for now. Once you’ve mastered their allure, merge the rhythmic pulse with the enchanting pitches. Witness the magic unfold as the song comes alive in your hands!

4. Embrace the Power of Pause

Feeling stuck in a battle of wills with an especially challenging song? It’s time to call for a temporary truce. Step away from it and engage in something else entirely, or divert your focus to practicing a different song. When you return to the battlefield of music, take a fresh approach. Explore new techniques, experiment with alternate strategies, and unleash your creativity. Sometimes, a well-deserved break is just what you need to conquer the unconquerable.

5. Unlock the Secrets of Song Memorization

Imagine the thrill of performing a difficult song flawlessly, with each note flowing naturally from your fingertips. To achieve this level of mastery, embark on the journey of memorization. Once you can navigate through the challenging song with only a few minor hiccups, it’s time to commit it to memory. Gradually and methodically, piece by piece, engrave the song into your mind. As the melody becomes ingrained within you, playing will feel instinctive, effortless, and utterly magical. Prepare to unleash your inner maestro and captivate audiences with your seamless execution.

I really like that we get to pick what songs we want to learn in Marcos’s guitar class. I also love that he is compassionate and lets us progress at our own pace. Marcos knows EVERYTHING about instruments, and I’m glad he can share some of it with me. I’m glad that I get to learn how to read, write, and play music for the guitar. It is a lot of fun when Marcos and I play the guitar together!
