12 Wacky Music Sub-Genres

These days it seems like every artist is creating their own genre. This idea sent us on a search to discover the 12 strangest genre names. Some are legitimate, others…not so much. Either way this list will leave you scratching your head and perhaps find you some new tunes!

August 26, 2017

1. Heaven Trap

Slander was the first to use this sub-genre to describe their uplifting sound over 808 beats. But Heaven Trap? C’mon, that’s a stretch.

2. Witch House

Starting off as an alternative rave scene in Moscow where young teens dressed in all black, witch house has grown to encompass dark, ethereal music with a penchant for the occult.

3. Future Ratchet

Because being a regular ratchet is so passé…

4. Happy Hardcore

Don’t get confused, this is an actual genre and is also responsible for the birth of kandi kids.

5. Temple Glitch Hop

For the more spiritually enlightened glitch hop fan.

6. BootyTech

Because no booty should be left unloved.

7. Bubblegum Dance

Categorized with cute lyrics and happy sounds, bubblegum dance is an actual sub genre of Eurodance. This throwback track should jog your memory.

8. Fidget House

According to The Guardian, Fidget House is “defined by snatched vocal snippets, pitch-bent dirty basslines and rave-style synth stabs over glitchy 4/4 beats.” Producers Jesse Rose and Switch coined the term, “as a joke, which has now gone a little too far.”

9. VomitStep

We’re not really sure what constitutes as VomitStep, but Snails has certainly made it a genre of his own.

10. Aquacrunk

Also known as “wonky”, aquacrunk is a genre developed by Glasgow native Rustie.

11. Skweee

With an extra ‘e’ for emphasis, Skweee is a genre that emerged out of Sweden and Finland. Originally coined by Daniel Savio in 2008, Skwee went on to influence 2nd-wave dubstep producers like Rusko and Joker.

12. Lovestep

According to the official Lovestep group on Reddit, “Lovestep has the same strong, dark, and rhythmic basslines as Dubstep, but lacks the heavy distortions commonly found in Dubstep tracks. Instead, Lovestep songs tend to have more melodic undertones, with occasional vocal sampling from western Pop and R&B tracks.”

I love how Marcos lets me learn so many songs, not just one! I like how he gives me compliments. It’s really fun when Marcos does the bass clef with the left hand and I get to make up my own song that goes with it for a warm up. It’s fun because I get to make up my own songs. I love the sound of the piano!

I really like that we get to pick what songs we want to learn in Marcos’s guitar class. I also love that he is compassionate and lets us progress at our own pace. Marcos knows EVERYTHING about instruments, and I’m glad he can share some of it with me. I’m glad that I get to learn how to read, write, and play music for the guitar. It is a lot of fun when Marcos and I play the guitar together!

Both of my children love their music lessons with Marcos. They look forward to their music lessons each week and come home eager to practice their new pieces. I especially love that he teaches them to compose their own pieces and inspires their musical creativity. Marcos is always positive and encouraging with my children, and he has a knack for bringing out their best. I highly recommend 123 Rock to anyone looking for a music teacher!

Marcos Moscat is a talented musician and instructor. His approach to teaching is kind and respectful. He encourages his students to study music that appeals to them. By attending to the interests of each student, Marcos is a master at nurturing student engagement. Our son, Jackson, has been taking lessons for over two years. Jackson is proud of his accomplishments at the piano and he enjoys the time he spends with his teacher. Both Marcos and Isabel are warm and […]
